I am still on the steep uphill of the learning curve for school board directors. Here are a few observations from someone with a fresh perspective on the Bellingham School District.
Our community has been blessed with an outstanding administration and staff. We are very lucky to have such talented people at the Bellingham School District. They work hard for the District, and I must presume that the biggest motivator for them is that there is truly a commitment to the children of the District. The more I observe, the more I think that they really have a special calling, a personal mission, to do this work for our kids.
My fellow board members are likewise remarkable people. The volume of work done by these volunteers simply can not be adequately acknowledged. The current President and Vice President of the Board have put so many hours, days, years into this work that I feel I must begin every encounter from a perspective of gratitude and recognition of the work they have done for my children and yours.
Bellingham is often touted as a town that has no trouble attracting talented professionals. But we have been a bit lucky so far. There is no guarantee that we will maintain this level of professionalism at the School District, and no surety that we can improve upon our current staff. Choosing the next Superintendent is likely the most important thing we will ever do as a Board. With your help, we will choose the right person to lead us into the next generation.
